McNaughton Park Trail Runs: The 100

McNaughton was another excellent adventure.

I feel so very fortunate to have met such wonderful people, to be able to call these people my friends. I wouldn't have so many incredible friends if I hadn't met them through running.

I left home early Friday to pick up Scott Wagner, then Alicia Gordon and finally John Storkamp, before we headed out for Pekin, IL. For a while at John's were weren't so sure when we'd be leaving. My car keys were lost. John eventually suggested we look on the roof, and yes, there they were, we were off and running.

I think the road trip was as much fun as anything else during the weekend. We laughed and laughed..all the way there and all the way back. My abs hurt today. It was fantastic fun..

After numerous stop breaks we managed to arrive at our hotel by 4:00 PM; checked in, and headed over to packet pick up. John and Alicia hadn't seen the trail before so we walked a few miles out and back. We realized how hot and humid it was..instantly. I mean, it was humid and sweat rolling down your chest hot...and we were only walking. Pekin broke a record 89F Friday.

We then chatted with Andy, the Race Director, who I must say puts on a fabulous production. The race is friendly, well organized and fun to run. He had very nice apparel again for the runners. The 30-50 milers received red shirts kind of similar to last year's technical shirts and the 100 milers received a red/black Brooks jacket and hat. Awesome.

By 8:00 we were back in our room, ready to sleep. That was a nice thought, but not one to come to fruition. I couldn't fall asleep. All night long I lay there, awake. I don't think anyone else slept much either. It was a sleepless evening.

4 AM arrived. We packed up the last of our gear, filled bottles and packs, and headed out to the race start. It was warm out already, but the humidity seemed to have vanished. The forecast showed a high of 85F with an 80% chance of night time thunderstorms. I was OK with the heat, but I really didn't want the thunderstorms.

John and Alicia were running the 30 mile, this would be Alicia's first ultra; Scott was pacing me for 50 and I was running the 100. The 30, 50 and 100 all began at 6 AM.

Note: next year there will the 50 and 100 option, only. Andy will not be holding the 30.

Maria Barton was running the 30 mile as well. We chatted with her a bit as we began the first loop but fast as she was, we never saw her again! Maria finished the 30 mile in just over 6 hours..I believe.

I and Alicia were able to run the first loop together. It was cool because at the first section we could see John running fast across the field from us. He was in second place. Speed.

The sun came up, the long sleeved shirts came off and temp rose..within the first loop. The wild flowers were beautiful, the rivers were full and I and Alicia just enjoyed the sights and the conversation around us. It was awesome. We ran along with smiles on our faces...wondering what the day would bring.

In 2:05 we were back at the start and I knew I needed to go out a bit slower than that. It just felt so good, I figured I'd run a few 2:15's then settle into 2:30's and try to eek out whatever I could during the night.

John flew by me, as anticipated, on his way to the finish. I can't imagine to be able to run like that. It looks as though he moves effortlessly and so fast. He finished in 4:15; good for 4th. Congrats, John.

I just kept moving forward, running with Chrissy (XY) Weiss who creates Dirty Girl Gaiters. It was so much to talk with her, this was her 10th 100. She is running Kettle Moraine, Badwater and Wasatch this year. Go girl. We ran together quite a bit during the whole race.

Alicia finished her run in just over 7 (congratulations)! so she, John and Scott went back to the room to clean up. I was worried about them coming back to the race as someone had to drive us home on Sunday. They needed some rest, I wanted them to sleep. They came back to the race though, and catered to my every whim.

Scott began to pace me at mile 50. I came in at 11:45. Alicia filled my bottles, John gave me some potatoes and I and Scott were on our way. He ran up ahead of me and I'd follow, always keeping him in my sights. He pointed out the logs for me and anything else I might trip over. He'd run up ahead at each aid station and get whatever I needed. It was wonderful to have Scott to guide me.

We grabbed our lights for the 60-70 mile loop. John went to get my batteries and guess what? I packed AAA's instead of AA or vise versa. I couldn't believe it. I didn't even have extra batteries. Scott had an extra pack somewhere so I used his. How stupid of me. I did other stupid things as well.

During the 70-80 mile loop my feet were really beginning to blister badly. I had removed the elasticon I wrapped them with earlier because there was so much sand stuck to the tape. The sand was rubbing my skin off. They had been blistering for most of the day, per usual, but the river crossings, the sand, it was all too much for my feet. I don't know why I have such blistering problems. There were 100 miler runners out there who didn't have ANY blisters. Believe me, I asked around. At times it was all that I could think about.

Scott told me we were going to take longer than the usual 1 minute stop at the main aid station. We were going to get food and sit down to eat, he was going to have John and Alicia fix my feet. I figured it was hopeless and I'd just tough it out. I really didn't want to waste time sitting in a chair at the aid station. Alicia brought me food, John removed my gaiters and socks. He applied Vaseline to each toe and across the bottom and told me I'd be fine. He went to get a pair of dry socks that I told him were in my bag. Well, gee, guess I forgot to bring along spare socks too. Good grief. Scott, again, came to the rescue and had a spare pair. After eating and having my feet fixed I felt very good. It was a 20 minute stop, but well worth it. The next loop I was able to move along.

I found out later that John just told me that my feet were fine; in reality he knew they were falling apart, but didn't want to freak me out any more. Good move on his part.

Next loop and the thunderstorm hit. It was cold and windy and the rain fell hard. The trail turned to a muddy mess. The hills that were difficult to get up and down while dry were almost impossible for me. I would usually get off the trail a bit and find a way next to the trail to navigate that was covered in leaves and sticks. My feet were throbbing. The blisters were popping and new ones were arriving.

The aid station volunteers were all smiles, offering us whatever we could possible want. Andy was at the start finish, high fiving us every time we ran through. He'd announce our arrival each loop. It was incredible fun. The endorphins were at an all time high. It was one huge party, if running is your kind of fun!

The sun finally came up and we were running our last loop. Thank God. This 100 mile run was all fine and fun, but it would be awesome to just be finished. My feet hurt more than they ever have. 7 blisters popped that last loop. I knew I had to just suck it up and stop complaining about them. Complaining wasn't going to make the blisters feel better. Scott told me to disassociate with the pain, let it go. I did. I pretended that they no longer hurt.

Chrissy had hung with us for a few more loops. Scott told me I could finish in 27 something and could probably place third but that I had to hammer. I told him I didn't have any hammer left and I didn't care where I placed. I just wanted to finish. He knows me better than that. I had told him months ago that my goal was to beat my PR prior and that 27 something would be incredible.. After I pouted a few minutes I realized that I did need to hammer. He was right. I did want 27 something, I wanted a PR and last year I ran this in 29:07. I got it together, told myself my feet were fine, hell, it was only blisters, not a stress fracture of PF or anything. Get moving girl and stop whining. Run on.

I did. I ran as fast as I could. Scott ran up ahead of me and told me to hammer harder. OK, I'm thinking, I'm hammering harder!! Finally, we were at the last section. 3 miles to the finish. I felt a huge blister across the ball of my foot and just prayed that it wouldn't pop before I got there. Just let it hold on until I reach the end. The popping is too painful.

As I came into the finish Scott told me to remove my pack, jacket and garbage bag for a rain jacket. I felt like a pack mule; I was so tired of carrying all of this stuff around my waist for the past 27 hours. Scott collected my things and I ran on in, Scott following. Tears ran down my cheek as I realized I was finally done. I had made it, I was able to finish in 27 something and the blister on the ball of my foot was still in one piece.

Andy announced my arrival; John and Alicia were right there, it was incredible. John and Alicia barely slept all night. They were there to cater to Scott and I, each time we came into the start finish. Just so I could run a 100 miles at McNaughton.

Friends like this don't get any better.

Scott was correct, he did get me in at 27 hours and I did get woman's third. I think my time was 27:27 or 27:37 but I could be wrong. I didn't really look at the clock. Thank you Scott.

We took pictures and hung out, I drank multiple Diet Pepsi's and coffee. Eventually I was shaking so much so we went back to the hotel for a shower before heading home.

Alicia removed my socks and shoes. My feet are shocking. I've never seen them this blistered and beat up. We were still laughing though. John took pictures of the 101 blisters and Scott said I needed to send them to Jon Vonhoff ( Book: Fixing Your Feet) to teach me how to care for my feet! But seriously, I need to know how to beat this whole blister thing. It could cost me a 100.

What a crazy road trip home. We realized that I had been awake over 70 hours but I was just too ramped up to doze off. The endorphins were still flowing freely. After dropping off John, Alicia and Scott; I did arrive safely at home last night. I didn't have the energy to climb the stairs to bed so camped out on the couch.

I'll probably be hitting the couch quite a bit today.

Alicia, Scott and John: Thank You.

I have a few pictures to post; John is going to send me some more. When I receive I will post.

Pre-McNaughton

I just checked the weather forecast for Pekin, IL: 88F with chance of thunderstorms and wind. Wowza. That could be a bit difficult. I love warm but am not quite ready for it yet. I have only run in shorts 2x this year-both this week. On the plus side, I may look forward to the night running with the break in temperature. But thundertorms..that would kind of suck. Naw, it will be A-OK. Positive thinking, you know!

This week has been all about tapering. I and Topaz went for a few walks in the woods, one trail run and last night I ran with run club. It was 70F and felt hot. I'm definately not acclimated to heat.

Steve and the boys will be spending the weekend on frozen pizzas, pot pies and tv dinners. They love when I leave and they get to eat junk food. It usually doesn't enter the house.

I am feeling a bit guilty about being away during Easter. We are coloring eggs tonight, I'll have the Easter baskets all ready for Steve to hide. We still do the whole bunny thing. I baked a Bun Bun cake last night that I have been making for 14 years. I will post a picture of it, it's so cute and I finally loaded my camera software; again.

Tonight I'll pack and clean out my car. We're taking my vehicle as it gets the best gas mileage of the 4 (Honda CRV) and there is enough room for all. Scott is going to drive it. Tomorrow I head out around 530 AM.

Over and Out!

Sloppy!

I awoke Sunday morning to a thunderstorm. A raging thunderstorm; thunder, lightening and pouring rain. I stretched my legs, did ankle circles under the covers; nothing hurt from yesterday's hills.

I really didn't have to go out in that cold rain. I should taper shortly. I ran 8 hours yesterday; I have nothing to gain by going out in the cold rain for a few hours.

But can I even imagine not beginning a Sunday morning without a run? What would I do while everyone slept? Clean house, do laundry? Great fun.

Well, just take the morning off. Be a normal person.

After I decided I wasn't going to go out in the rain I did do some laundry and I did write a grocery list. I pulled out some clean clothes and headed for the shower.

Topaz nosed his way into the bathroom. As I began to run the shower water he showed me his sad eyes and his chin almost drooping to the floor. He wanted to run. He didn't get to run on Saturday since I was out frolicking with my friends.

Oh Pup!

I softly said "Ok, Tope, let's go for a run" Oh the joy! For both of us. I was happy, I knew how I was going to begin my day, and Topaz was beyond thrilled.

Into my running clothes, out to the car..brrr..cold and wet and driving rain. Oh well. It could rain all day at McNaughton.

Not a soul was on the trail. I and Topaz ran for 3 hours in the cold driving rain. I had a cap on, yes, I became soaked through, but still..a great start to the day. One that I am accustomed to.

Zumbro Bottoms Fat Ass Run

Today Larry Pederson, Race Director Extrordinare, held the ZBFA run. I believe this is the 4th year he has put on this wonderful run. Larry lives in Zumbro Falls, and about 20 minutes from his home is the Zumbro River Bottoms.

A "Fat Ass" run is one without a timer, entry fees, may or may not have aid or prizes. It's a group of people getting together to run..purely for fun.

The run today began whenever you wanted it to. Larry stated that the run wouldn't be timed so you could begin at 7 or later.

I set my alarm for 3 AM; headed out by 430 and still didn't arrive by 7AM. I arrived about 720. There were others milling about the 'assembly' area. Some had headed out, and some were still arriving.

The assembly area is near the river, down at the bottom of the bluffs, with outhouses and picnic tables. Larry had maps out of three different loops he had marked; the pink loop was 10 miles, the green loop was 7 miles and the orange loop was 7 miles. I think. I may have it confused by now. I was confused while I was running it!

If you ran 3 loops plus another of the 7 you'd have approximately 50K.

I was OK with running any distance. McNaughton is only 2 weeks out, I could train or not, at this point it really doesn't matter. I didn't care if I ran 10 or 30.

I, Maria and Greg grabbed the orange River loop maps and we were off.

Oh my gosh! We became turned around within the first mile! This loop was along the river, in the marshes and wetlands. We waded through the river-but made Greg go first incase it was over his head! He is much taller than I and Maria, and went right up past his thigh! Marie and I opted to follow the river a bit further down and cross where it looked to be knee height. Good practice for McNaughton as we cross 3 river crossings every 10 mile loop.

We ended up running most of this loop in reverse, as we somehow messed up the route. I was very thankful to be running with others. We think our 7 mile run on this loop was more like 10 miles as we kept missing turns and re-running the route. Or maybe that is just wishful thinking...

We ran back to the assembly area, filled our bottles, I grabbed a banana, chatted with others for a while, we grabbed a map of the pink route. OH! This was a beautiful 10 mile section.

Away from the river, we ran up up up the bluffs. The scenery was fantastic. The trails were pretty dry-there were some real real muddy and slippery sections, but the most part it was very good. Especially after we just ran that wet river section.

Larry had marked some bushwacking along the trail. We went straight down a bluff, I don't think it was even a deer trail, it was just Larry having fun with us. Down we went, straight down the incline with burrs and shrub and mud. We did have fun too.

Back down down down the bluff, down to the river bottom, just when I didn't think we could go any further down; down we would go. It was incredible. Then up up up the river bluff, to the top of the world. The overlooks were incredible!

We ran back to the assembly..didn't get turned around at all during the pink loop and then grabbed maps for the green section and off we went.

The green section went up even higher than the pink. We were on top of the bluffs and could see the river below, the farms, it was amazing. We didn't get lost on this loop either. We just had a fabulous run.

Back at the assembly we decided 27 some miles was enough. We sat around the fire and visited with about 10 other runner friends. We all talked about the trails, all of the work Larry puts into this just for us to have some fun, and how much fun we had.

We spoke of other races to come this summer, what are goals are, who is running what.

What an awesome day. It was wonderful to see everyone one again and to get that first spring long run in!

Fogged In

After I awoke this morning and looked out the window, I assumed I was having another nightmare about flying. I hate flying. I thought I was probably dreaming I was again in the airplane, freaking out, heading into clouds, on my way to Jamaica.

Not so.

I couldn't see a thing out my bedroom window. It looked as if our home had been placed inside a marshmallow; all white and thick.

It was too early for the newscasts to show if Big Lake had a late start or cancelation, so I just prepared for the work day per usual. Before I awoke the boys, however, the notice was there: 2 hour late start for Big Lake. Awesome!

I cleaned house, finished up laundry and checked the news before I went to wake the boys: Big Lake Cancelled. Woohoo! No school.

We received a little gift from Mother Nature! A Fog Day.

I and Topaz headed for the trail. I could not see a thing the way over there; just drove slowly and made sure my lights were on.

The trail is in awesome condition. The snow and ice is all gone, I was running on lovely grass and dirt. It is not even muddy, which is very strange.

10 miles later, the sun had burned off the fog..it's going to be an awesome day :)

No Problem, Man

Or, I suppose it is Mon. I hear that phrase over and over again in Jamaica. It has to be the country phrase. "No Problem, Mon" and there is no problem.

Jamaica was again, simply paradise. We stayed at Beaches Negril, in Negril, Jamaica. It is located right on the Seven Mile Beach. It is white sand for as long as you can see. It is simply awesome.

I ran along the beach each day for 7 miles at least..sometimes I headed out for an evening run to watch the sunset as Steve and the boys walked along. It was paradise.

The food was fabulous. I ate more fresh asparagus, beans, tomato, cantalope, watermelon, pineapple and other fruits and veggies than I can even list. Everything is prepared with minimal oil; they don't add whipping cream to fruit salads; just a bit of walnut, golden raisin and chopped up apple is wonderful. We had grilled prawns, halibut, snapper, lobster, jamaican goat, jerk chicken, jerk pork, jerk beef; zillions of wonderful choices for each meal.

Steve drank the Red Strip Beer; I and the boys had Mickey Mouses, Pina Colada, Sweet Sixteen and Strawberry Daquari. There were 27 non-alcoholic cold fruit drinks to choose from. Splendid.

The boys loved the self serve ice cream cone maker on the beach. It was inclusive; eat 24-7.

And I lost 3 pounds! With all of the wonderful choices I didn't feel the need to stuff myself with the cakes and pies available.

We snorkeled, parasailed, kayaked, river rafted and went cliff diving. Crazy.

It's good to be home though.

This morning I and Topaz headed out for the trail for a run. The snow is just about gone. I think Spring may have arrived.

McNaughton is 3 weeks out. I guess my training is in the bank. I'll run a marathon or 50K out at Zumbro River Bottoms next Saturday and then cut back again on mileage. Before I know it, Pekin, IL...here we come!

HAPPY VALENTINE DAY

I love Valentine Day. It encompasses all of my favorite things: Pink and Red; Godiva Chocolate, Gold Gifts and Cards. I love it all. I love to give it and to receive it.

Troy had already eaten 8 Godiva Truffles before I left for work this morning. His oatmeal cereal was still sitting on the table-untouched. On Valentine Day I allow the boys to eat whatever they like. No, we don't usually have Godiva for breakfast, but, well, you know...Tyler hadn't consumed quite as much as Troy. He had the Govida Milk Chocolate assortment and had ONLY consumed 3 pieces.

Steve left the house at 4 AM; before my 430 wake up call so he didn't get his Godiva yet. Isn't Godiva the best!!

I received a very beautiful gold link chain with big huge heart pendant. Yum Yum.

Plus our king sized Select Comfort Sleep Number bed will be delivered and set up today. I should be receiving a call at any time to meet the installers at home.

Today: that wonky workout. Woofie increased my speed to 30 seconds at 8.8 mph; then 30 seconds at 4.8 mph. I completed 35 minutes after a mile warmup and then 2 miles cool down. Still not my favorite.

I've decided that Wednesday and Friday mornings will be my swim days. I bought a new suit, goggles and cap. All set to hit the pool tomorrow AM before work.

Have a Happy Valentine's Day!!

Topaz the Turbo Dog

With the additional 2" of snow received over the last few days I noticed that the roads were icy and snow covered yesterday. The trail that I like to snowshoe on is closed for cross country skiiers and with the new powder, I knew they would be hogging the trail.

That left the land near my home that the developer has allowed me to snowshoe upon this winter. It has gently rolling hills, mostly open field with oak and pine surrounding the fields which makes for a great wind block.

At 7 AM I strapped on the snowshoes and noticed that one of my lower claw thingies is missing. I must have lost in at the snowshoe marathon a few weeks ago. People were asking others if they had lost a crampon or campon or whatever the heck they are called, I call them claw thingies, but I never looked to see if it was I who lost one, I guess it was. That could account for the hard time I had getting up the hills and for the way I was sliding down hill at the marathon. Oh well.

I and Topaz headed out over the field, up the hills, down the hills, through the woods, through the fields. Oh my gosh, that dog! He was wide open, running fully extended, his front and back legs evenly extended with his back. He was crazy, like he couldn't get enough. He would run out in front of me, 1/2 mile out, then come back as fast as he could fly..and he was flying..back to me. He would lay in the snow until I caught back up, then off he'd go again. He was fully enjoying himself, as was I.

It's amazing to me how the running and herding is bred into the Border Collie. It is what they love to do and what they do so well. He is the perfect dog for me, the perfect training partner.

Coming up on three hours I decided I'd follow his tracks. What a riot. He was zig-zagging all over the fields, criss-crossing back and forth. We had a great time.

When I yelled "OK, all done Tope" he trotted back to the car and waited for me.

What a great day in the snow.

Thank You

Thank you so very much for all of the kind thoughts and words. I appreciate it very very much.

It's been tough. Real tough.

Tomorrow night is the Big Lake Booster Club Fundraiser: Putting On The Ritz. It's a night of dancing and dinner, comedian, etc. It's an event where we dress in our formals and have a blast. The whole run club attends.

Last year I, Ann and Debbie went together. We had a lot of fun; Ann and I were the last to leave.

This year I wasn't going to attend. Ann was sick and the thought of going without her made me sad.

Today Debbie called me and told me to rethink that decision. With Ann's wake/funeral on Sunday and Monday, I could use a lift. Ann would have loved that Debbie and I go to honor her memory.

I will be there.

Last year I shopped for the perfect floor length dress, the perfect shoes, etc. This year I have about one hour to shop tomorrow. If I can't find a dress, I will wear last years. I'm having a neighbor take it in now. Thank goodness she was able to. It's too big for me now.

It's funny because last year Ann said "Julie, you must have paid a fortune for that dress. You better wear it again." "Ann, there is no where else I'd ever wear it" "Then you'll wear it here again next year..and I'll wear the same one too".

If there is a heaven, that is where she is, and she'll laugh out loud when she sees me wearing the same dress to Putting On The Ritz.

I and Ann; Run Club 10/05 Posted by Picasa

TCM 10/05 Posted by Picasa

My Dear Friend Ann

Today is a dark day. It is one that I knew would probably come, eventually, but I was hoping against hope that it wouldn't. I was hoping and praying that someway, somehow Ann would be able to recover from Stage Four Lymphoma.

This morning, at 710 AM, Ann passed away ..

No more struggling, no more tiredness, none of that. Ann is in a better place.

I met Ann 6 years ago. She and her son were enrolled in an ECFE class with I and Troy. I had just run my first marathon-Grandmas Marathon of 1999-and was telling the class about it. Ann came up to me and told me that she used to run High School track and was interested in getting back into it.

At that point our friendship began.

I told her there was a Big Lake Run Club, but that I was a bit apprehensive in checking them out. I knew it was mainly men, and fast lean men, and I was afraid I wouldn't cut the mustard.

We began to meet weekly to run and to get her mileage up to five miles. Once she was at five miles we decided to meet the Big Lake Runners.

Thank goodness we did! They welcomed us with open arms and we have been attending the Wednesday night runs since.

A few years later I asked Ann if she'd like to run a marathon before turning 40. "Wouldn't that be awesome, Ann..a marathon.. before 40!" Impossible, she thought. I knew better. She was going to be running Grandmas with me the following year.

We began training and sure enough..we were at the start line in a few short months. I had just run FANS 24 Hour Run two weeks before Grandmas so the plan was to stay together as long as we could, then she should go out on her own, as I'd be tired. She thought I'd go out on my own. Not so. At mile 20 she kicked it up a notch and off she went!

It was an awesome day.

Since then I and Ann have shared many many hours together. Ann ran her first 2 50K's this last summer. I had the honor of running the 2nd with her. I watched her finish the first.

Just four short months ago we ran Twin Cities Marathon.

Everything can change in a minute.

Take care, my dear friend, Ann. I love you.

Shorts ?

I am feeling recovered from the marathon. Actually I would classify it as an ultra, as the GPS's on the course showed the distance at 28.5 miles. I like that.

Instead of 6x800's on Tuesday I completed 3, then headed out on the trail with Topaz. My shin was still feeling stressed from the fall/snowshoes and it just scared me. I've been injury free since I began to run, I don't want to ruin that streak. The trail felt good.

Wednesday I didn't run the asphalt with Run Club. Again, I opted for a kinder, more gentle run on the trail with Topaz. I loved it.

Today it is supposed to be 45 freakin' degrees. Yeah, 45F in Central Minnesota..in January. How does that rock? Woohoo! I love it.

I ran my tempo run on the treadmill this AM at 3:45 and the leggies felt great. I am feeling recovered and ready to roll. After work today is a snow shoe run in shorts I think! What a picture, hu? I can't wait to get out in that sunshine!!

At 645 this evening I have a massage scheduled. Ahhhhh.....I feel the release of tension already....

What a race!

I headed out for Duluth yesterday morning, approximately 6 AM. Imagine my suprise when after driving for 15 minutes I realized I was heading for Minneapolis, not Duluth. Good grief! I guess I had other things on my mind...

I arrived in Duluth at 9:08 AM; the marathon began at 9:30. Not a good way to start out. I was stressed, looking for Lester River Park and of course couldn't remember WHICH road to turn onto. A kind woman was walking her lab and gave me correct directions.

9:24; arrived at the race. Found a parking place, grabbed my snowshoes out of the car and ran to the race start. Oops. I need a number and pins. Back to the race check in point. It's 9:27. Affix number, check in, get to start line. SHEESH!

JULIE BERG..ARE YOU HERE? Says the race director..YES I'M HERE! OK, we are off..

Race day conditions were excellent. It had snowed on Thursday, making a nice fresh topping on the snow cover. The trails were in excellent condition. Packed, not icy, not soft and deep, just wonderful.

The 1/2 marathon and marathon began at 930, the 10K at 1000. This is nice, as I enjoy seeing all the runners. It was fun to see the 10K'rs come speeding past. There were only 10 in the marathon..the runners get big spaces inbetween them and I hardly saw any of the marathoners. The course is a loop course, I enjoy loops as we get to see others, get to pass the start finish. Actually, the course was 4 loops and I always get lost somehow..I didn't let Scott get too far away from me as I had to have follow someone who didn't get as mixed up with directions as I do. I'm awful.

It was 9F at the start, NO wind and sunshine. Yeah!

The course is on trail, lots of ups and downs, across rivers, meadows, wooded trail, a bit of road, just spectacular.

As we ran into the 1/2 way mark at the start/finish, guess what I did. I FELL! Flat on my face. My snowshoe hooked on something, the toe of it bent in back of me, my leg caved in on top of it and I was splatted on the ground. It was a horrible time to fall as the 1/2 marathon runners were all standing around the finish line, the photographer was right there and there I was. Flat on my face. They asked if I was OK, I said "Yes, I just wasn't getting enough attention" Way embarassing.

After that my shin began to give me problems. I suppose I somehow strained it. The pain began in my shin, then with about two hours left of the race the pain concentrated in my knee. I took a few Advil but they didn't help. There was only one pace I could keep up: a pace where I lightly ran, kind of hopping, trying to releave the pressure on my knee. It hurt most running downhill; I gritted my teeth and made fists with my hands so I wouldn't scream. Damn. It hurt.

I sucked it up and kept on. I certainly wasn't going to drop, I just wished I could finish pain-free.

At 6:15 I crossed the finish line, happy to be finished with the race. Happy to visit with my friends and talk about the fun we were having.

I found out that I was the only woman who began the race. Gee, guess I won, hu? I have a real nice pottery bowl that says Woman Champion. Pretty cool. A very nice sweatshirt as well. This race always has awesome finisher sweatshirts for the marathoners.

The post race party is a great time. Lots of friends, lots of pizza and pop and talking big. It was so nice to see everyone again. Races are few and far between in the frozen north, I loved being able to see everyone.

At the post race party, at Fitgers, I won something else...

A two person KAYAK! Oh my gosh, I couldn't believe it. It is huge! An $850 dollar value. Guess I'll learn to kayak this summer up at the cabin :)

It was a great day!

Today I strapped back into the snowshoes are ran 5 with Topaz. He was slighted yesterday.

Off to Duluth..

I've been up to my eyeballs in other things this week and by the looks of my last entry here, I haven't been up to my eyeballs in blogging.

Workouts are going well. Tuesday was 800's; Wednesday was Run Club, Thursday was tempo-my new favorite. Today was weight training and running with Topaz on the trail.

Tomorrow is the Northwoods Snowshoe Marathon. Yippee! I'll head out in the morning; the race doesn't begin until 930 and it's about 2.5 hours to Duluth. I was planning to spend the night in Duluth but I may just drive home after the post race party.

There is a fantabulous party a few hours after the race at Fitgers Hotel. Pizza, beer, pop, prizes..lots of fun with fun people.

It doesn't look like there is a blizzard to get in my way this year!

Race Results

I've had numerous requests relating to the race results on this blog. I didn't realize my runners read this blog or even knew about it. Kind of scary. Here they are :

Ann Maser 8 K January 14, 2006 Big Lake MN

These results are the best I can do. I don’t know that they are perfect. We stopped the clock at 62:27.

Thank you for showing your support for Ann.

22 Miles of Hills

Todays workout was more hills. As I previously said, I lack hill workouts. But not for long.

Today I headed out for a 3.5 hour workout on the same route as last week. Nice, long hills. They didn't hurt quite as much as last week. Woofie asked me to think 'run on hot coals' while running up the hills. On toes, light and fast. That's what I thought and that is what I did.

My heart rate really zoomed while running those hills; I saw 196, 203, but the average was 162; right on target.

My first 17 miles were at an average of 9:07 minute miles; the last 4 last miles were at 10:15. Not bad for this chick :)

I'm finding that I look forward to my weekly tempo run. On Thursday night I went to complete it at the gym. I have a treadmill at home; but with the boys running around, asking for this and that, the telephone ringing and people coming to the door, it's a better bet to finish the workout without any interruptions at the gym.

I ran 6 x 10 minutes @ 7.5 mph (168-170 HR) with a 2 minute recovery. It was an awesome workout. I had been dreading it all day, being that it is only my second week of these workouts and I'm familiar with none of them. But I must say, I really enjoyed this one. I felt worked but it didn't exhaust me. I was fully recovered for the long run.

Next Saturday is the Northwoods Snowshoe Marthon in Duluth, MN. 26 miles on snowshoes. My last time running this race was just under 6 hours, I'm hoping I can get finished in under 6 hours again. Each year has great variables. How much snow? How fast is the snow? How cold is it? How windy is it? Last year there was 3' of new snow, I was stuck in a blizzard and couldn't make it. Only 2 people finished the whole race if I recall correctly. The year before was perfect. A few feet of fast snow, temps of 15F, light wind. It's frosty no matter what. I recall a frozen face mask and ice in my eyes. Oh Joy. It's great race; lots of friends and lots of fun!

Ann's Race

My very good friend, Ann, is fighting for her life. She was diagnosed with Stage 4 Lymphoma back in October; after running a PR at Twin Cities Marathon on October 3. After running a 50K with me in September. It's just horrible.

As I posted earlier, I'm putting together a race for her this Saturday. All entries go to Ann, it's a fundraiser to help out with expenses for her and her family.

I have 60 people entered so far! My goal was to raise $1000 and have 50 people enter. I've surpassed that and it sure feels good.

One of our run club members has donated all of the t-shirts; they are so awesome. They are purple (Ann's favorite color) and the artwork is by another run club member, who is an artist. It is a caricature of Ann and just fabulous. I have seen the print work; can't wait to see them in person.

I think I'm all set. I have volunteers to work the start/finish line, I've put together the race packets, I have the ribbons, the prizes donated for door prizes, (MN Twins Tickets and Merchandise, Run shop merchandise, massages, etc), the time clock, food and drink for after the race. I hope I'm not forgetting anything!

Today I ran 6x800@ 3:30 minutes for a 180 HR. Easier than last week. I did them at the gym-it helped to have AC/DC blaring out of my iPod and the guy on the treadmill next to me-he was going faster than I and really working hard-that motivated me to get my workout done.

Tempo

I didn't sleep through my workout this morning. Topaz was clicking his toenails all over the wood floor below me, wanting to go outside at 345 AM. I let him out, waited for him to get his frolic in and went back to bed, but couldn't get back to sleep. Steve's alarm went on and I figured I might as well get up before my 430 wake up call.

Today's workout was on the treadmill at home: 5 x 10 minutes @ HR of 166-171. I began with a 5 minute warmup. My first two 10 minute sessions were at 7.3 mph for a 171 HR. By session 3 and 4 my HR of 171 took on a 7.1 mph pace and the final 10 minutes only took a 6.8 mph pace. I was exhausted. Last summer I was doing speed work at 7.3 mph; now it a tempo pace. My speed work is now an 8 mph pace per my run coach.

I'm a slow plodder, the only way I will get faster and beat those cut off's is to work hard during my workouts. As I thought I was going to cough up a lung I reminded myself of my goals and the fact that THIS is why I hired a coach. To get me out of my comfort zone and get me moving more quickly.

Coach has trimmed me of my 'junk' miles. Each workout is planned and key. The Topaz runs on the trail after work are just extra and for fun. Today will be a 3 mile snowshoe run with him.

Yesteday I lifted chest, bicep and tricep: 65 minutes and 5 miles with Run Club. The gym was FULL. I can't wait until all these people leave and only the regulars are left. I imagine by February 1.

Always the first time..

Today I slept through my workout! I set my clock for 415 AM but didn't wake up to turn it off. I slept on and on and on as it must have just buzzzzzed along until I finally turned it off at 6 AM. Oh my goodness. Guess I enjoyed my winter vacation a little too much!

Part of the reason I overslept could have been because I knew what workout was awaiting me: 800's. They are so difficult for me. I am not a speedy girl and well, speed hurts. I gasp and cough and feel rough.

All day long I had to think about what I was eating and drinking, being careful as I knew a 4 PM workout awaited me at home.

I warmed up with a light jog and multiple jumps, 10 minutes of jump rope. Then 6x800 @ 8MPH for 3:30 minutes; 2 minute recovery jog inbetween. Oh Lord.

My average heart rate was 177. Now I need to learn how to download the file from the watch to the computer. Guess I'll be pulling out my manual after my meeting tonight.

4.65 miles in 37 minutes. Yowza. Next week will be easier and I'm stronger in the AM!

Running In The New Year

Last night at 11:30 I climbed back into my winter running gear. I had just pulled it out of the dryer as I had just finished a long snowshoe run in what didn't seem like too many hours ago.

At 11:45 5 hearty souls from the Big Lake Run Club met in at our Wednesday night location and headed on out. It was 30F and not even a slight breeze. What a great night for a run.

At 12:00 Kevin's watch began to beep, we watched a few fireworks appear and high fived one another. We talked about how thankful we are, to be able to run in the New Year. Still healthy, still running, still alive and kicking. That's all we can ask for.

After we finished the 5 mile route we set up a table in the parking lot. Out came wonderful hot cocoa, cookies, biscotti, spinach dip and bread and some non-alcoholic champagne.

An awesome start to 2006!

Happy New Year!!

2005 is just about expired. I can't even believe how quickly the years go by. Yup, I sound just like my Mother. Good grief.

I spent the day just having a blast. I awoke at 5 AM so that I could be at Afton State Park prior to 8. On the way, stopped by St. Paul to pick up Marie and Bonnie. After unloading all of their gear into my car, we realized that I didn't have a State Park sticker. Oops. Had to get another workout carrying all the gear from my car to Bonnie's.

At Afton we met up with Scott and Alicia.

The snow was fabulous for snow shoe running. Just wonderful! I love Afton State Park. There is a nice visitor center with a wood stove, indoor plumbing with flushing toilets; what more can a gal ask for? Not to mention the best trails-wooded, open, meadow, ravines, hills, some flats, river, ski alps; you name it, Afton has it.

We spent a couple of hours out on the trail-running up and down the hills-looking at at the St. Croix River, watching the downhill skiiers. Just wonderful.

Each hour I gulped down a Coca Cola Cliff Shot (not my favorite..Mocha Mocha is) and I drank 60 oz of Hammer Heed. I never felt Bonkie; just feeling good.

After our run we warmed up in the Center, changed clothes and I, Bonnie and Marie headed off to Sunsets in Woodbury for a wonderful lunch to celebrate mine and Marie's birthday. I had a Tucson Grilled Chicken Salad that I highly recommend.

Tonight, per our New Years Eve tradition, the Big Lake Run Club gathers at 11:45 for a run around our Wednesday Night Run Club route at Midnight to ring in the New Year.

See..a fabulous day!

Tommorrow will begin with another couple of hours snowshoe running on my Blue Hill Trail with Topaz. He didn't get his Run On today!

Enjoy the New Year Celebration!

Winter Wonderland

We received a good 7" of fluffy white snow overnight. I was pretty suprised when I woke up and saw how much snow we received.

I and Troy hit the hill shortly after we awoke; we had to go out and mess up the new white snow.

The snow plows hadn't been by yet and I figured the Blue Hill Trail head wouldn't be plowed until mid-day. I decided to run a snowshoe run through our property.

We sit on a cul-de-sac and have over 5 acres so there is hardly any traffic around and plenty of space to run. I wouldn't want to have to run in my yard every day, but today it was actually fun.

I went up and down the driveway, through the cul-de-sac, onto our bike trail, around the veggie garden, up the hill, around the swimming pool, around the trampoline, up to the front yard and down the driveway. Repeat!

I was able to get in a good one hour run, huffing and a puffing.

The snow plow then came along and made a huge snow bank in front of our driveway. Steve is up north so is relieved of snow plow duty. I pulled out the shovel and got in a real good upper body workout.

Then figured Blue Hill Trail might be plowed out..and it was :)

What a wonderful way to spend my 41st Birthday.

2006 Calendar

The New Year is just about upon me. I feel quite different than I did last year at this time when I first created this blog.

I was feeling fat and unfit; although I was running 50 mile weeks. Somehow my weight had creeped up (read: sugar) and the big 4 - O h was making its presence known.

I was depressed.

Now, one year later, I am 25 pounds lighter and running faster than I ever believed I could. Once the weight came off, the miles became much easier.

Hey-and I'm not depressed about turning 41 next week. Not. At. All. Thank goodness. It's not like I could do anything about it anyway..hello!

Today I created my race schedule for 2006. All I can do from here on out is move forward. I have planned my races and have planned my workouts to get me there. I have big plans.

I published it on the sidebar.

I am going to begin taking swimming lessons next week so I will be adding in a few triathlons-when I'm not running races.

My 2006 goals will allow me to reach my 2007 goals.

I contacted a gal from MN who ran the Grand Slam a few years ago. She's the only woman in MN to have completed the series, plus, she is the youngest woman EVER to have completed the series. We are going to meet for coffee after the holidays so that I can learn from her. It will be very interesting to hear of her training and the races she completed to get her to the finish line at Wasatch. Wow. Sheesh. That seems so unattainable to me.

You know what, this all seemed so unattinable to me..

Today was a 10 mile snow shoe run in temperatures again, above average. 38F and sunny. Gotta like that.

Snow?

Each time I hear on the news that we are supposed to get a good snowstorm I can't help but roll my eyes. You wouldn't think there would be too much hurrah about a snowstorm..or even snow flakes in Minnesota.

All I hear on the news and radio is snow snow snow is coming. I won't hold my breath! I bet we'll be lucky to scrape out 2".

Today I brought my snowshoes to the trail but left them in the car. The path was pretty well worn down to the dirt so snowshoes weren't necessary. It still took me longer than sans snow to complete the 7 miles. I had to finish in the dark, in the middle of the woods. I had my headlamp stuffed down into my pocket. I somehow thought I'd beat the sunset. Nope. I didn't.

After a left over dinner of turkey and veggies I brought Troy to basketball practice, Tyler to guitar lessons and I hit the gym for 45 minutes of leg work before collecting my off spring.

My legs are tired now. That 50K on Sunday wore them right out!

50K Fat Ass

The race..well, it really wasn't a race, it was a get together with friends for a fun training run..but it was a blast.

Of course. How could it not be? A bunch of runners who LOVE to run, get together for chit chat, catching up time and let's get one hell of a good workout out in too while we are it. It was fabulous.

We met at the Lake Harriet Bandshell in Minneapolis at 815. We signed a waiver and dropped a few bucks into a baggie..then headed up the hill to a runner's house. At the house there were cookies, candy, crackers, oranges and a big container of water and one container of an energy drink.

We wrote our names in on a big piece of tag board hanging from the wall. Each loop was 4 miles; after each loop and a run to runner's home we signed in our time near our name.

I think 15 or so of us began the run, most didn't have any intention of running the full 50K. A few of us did.

Running around the Minneapolis Lakes is really quite a treat for me. I live 54 miles away so don't do daily running over there.

There are LOADS of runners doing the lakes each day; it's awesome. There are port a potties all over the place so I could go in a dry place whenever I needed. The luxury!

4 of us ended up running the complete distance. Scott and I finished in 6:18 or so I believe. We stopped at Dunn Brothers for coffee afterwards to talk big with the other runners.

What a blast.

Before I left home this morning I placed a 20 pound turkey in a cooking bag. I left Steve a note: please place on grill on low at 12:15. I'll be home by 5 and turkey should be ready.

I called Steve enroute home and sure enough..turkey was cooking well. Asked Steve to foil wrap a few big baking potatoes and place on grill.

Success!

Awesome turkey dinner after the run. It doesn't get much better than that :)

Wednesday Night Run Club

Well, Wednesday Night Run Club was..not. I had a 630 meeting, another member had a meeting, one member was sick. One member was going to run; I ran the run club route at 430 and then headed to my meeting. Meeting ended early so I went to the gym for an awesome chest/bicep workout and ran on the treadmill for a speedy 8 miles.

Had a great treadmill run..I shouted the whole time! A friend happened to be at the gym so we ran side by side. Sure helped the miles tick on by.

Hey-I was invited to a 50K Fat Ass run on Sunday around the Minneapolis Lakes. Woohoo! Lake Harriet to be exact. I'm sure looking forward to it. I had NO plans for Sunday and just like that..something fun to look forward too. Yippee.
